The Wonders of Wetlands (Wow)

September 12, 2020 @ 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

“The Wonders of Wetlands” is an comprehensive, interdisciplinary hands-on inquiry based curriculum for grade levels K-12 focusing on the three definitive wetland parameters: Water, Soil, and Plants. Wetlands play an essential part in the lives of both wildlife and people and are one of the highest producing ecosystems in the World. Join State Park Staff from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to learn all about utilizing wetlands as an investigative tool in your classroom. During this workshop we’ll take a look at the characteristics and the role of wetlands in our ecosystem, as well as how plants and animals have adapted to wetland life. The afternoon session participants will go on a Wetlands & Wildlife Kayak Paddle to see wetlands up close and personal to learn how to identify wetlands plants, to include aquatic invasive plants and their effects on the ecosystem. Participants will receive the Wonders of Wetlands curriculum guide. Earn 7 Act 48 hours while experiencing the sights and sounds of wetlands on Lake Arthur. Participants should bring a lunch and dress to be both indoors and outdoors. Bring water shoes or light pair of sneakers, water bottle and sunscreen for the kayaking portion. All equipment will be provided. Registration is required. Cost: $20. For more information or to register, please contact Environmental Education Specialist Mike Shaffer at mishaffer@pa.gov or 724 368-8811.
